Mains Drainage Scheme Celebration
Michael Howard has welcomed the completion of the scheme.
12 September 2007

Residents of New Romney celebrated on Friday (September 7) as a scheme to provide mains drainage for the town marked its completion.

Southern Water have laid sewers in the town allowing properties to connect to the network for the first time, bringing an end to the disruption and smells caused by

tankers emptying cess pits and septic tanks.

Michael Howard MP for Folkestone and Hythe, said: “I’m delighted to see the completion of this environmental improvement scheme.

“This was never going to be an easy scheme to deliver and it hasn’t been without its issues, but Southern Water and 4Delivery have provided mains drainage with less disruption than might have been expected and I’d like to thank them for that.”

This work was carried out so that the company could meet stringent European regulations under the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive.

Southern Water’s Director of Communications, Geoff Loader, presented the town with a series of framed photographs to commemorate the work, from the first turf cutting, through archaeological digs, and a final farewell from the team.

Clive Wire, The Right Worshipful Mayor of New Romney, said: “I would like to thank 4Delivery and Southern Water for all their help during this scheme, it has been a privilege for the people of New Romney to have such community-minded companies working in the town.

“Everyone who’s been involved with providing us with mains drainage will be sadly missed as we have come to regard them as friends.”

Southern Water’s contractor, 4Delivery Limited (4D), set up site at the treatment works in Station Road in New Romney at the beginning of August 2005 and now two years later the work is drawing to a close.

Anyone in New Romney who hasn’t yet connected to the new drainage system and would like to should contact Southern Water through their network development team on 01962 858688.
