selected by the Conservatives to fight for the seat when Michael Howard stands down at the next general election.
The two men visited Lydd just days after airport managers submitted their planning applications to extend the existing runway and construct a new terminal building capable of handling up to 500,000 passengers a year at Lydd. The applications were lodged with Shepway District Council on 18 December.
The planning applications are being supported by an Environmental Impact Assessment which has taken more than two years to prepare and Mr Howard and Mr Collins now have opportunity to study the main findings of the EIA, Michael Howard having been presented with a copy of the Assessment to read in detail.
Airport managing director Zaher Deir said Michael Howard had taken a keen interest in the proposals to modernise and upgrade facilities at Lydd and had attended a number of public meetings and presentations held at the airport.
‘Mr Howard has previously voiced his support for the limited expansion of Lydd airport and we welcomed the opportunity of providing him and Damian Collins with an update on our proposals. Our EIA is the most comprehensive survey ever to have been undertaken on this part of Romney Marsh and we are confident that our proposals will have no significant impact on the environment,’ added Zaher Deir. |
