tourism that mitigated its impact on climate change and protected local environments and communities.
Today Conservative MP for Harborough Edward Garnier voiced his support for Mr Howard's idea, and 'in applauding Michael Howard's donation of four trees' said that he has been following the tree-planting route for some time.
The Harborough Conservative Association and the MP are donating 10 trees this year to an arboretum in Market Harborough to compensate for the carbon emissions from his constituency office in the town. 'Like every modern office we use heating, lighting and other electric-powered machines such as computers and fax machines and they all create either directly or indirectly damage to the environment. We decided that whilst we cannot stop using electricity and other carbon fuels we can try to do something to compensate for the carbon pollution we create, hence the 10 trees,' Mr Garnier said.
Further support was voiced by Colchester Liberal Democrat MP Bob Russell - known to his constituents as 'The Tree Man of Colchester'. Mr Russell said, 'I shall be planting at least 25 acorns or other tree seeds this autumn to grow into new trees to be donated to schools etc in the following couple of years.'
Michael Howard welcomed the support of fellow MPs and said that his 'single most memorable day' in his 12 years in Government was pursuading the United States to attend the Rio Summit and sign the Climate Change Convention – the precursor to the Kyoto Protocol.
